On 19 October, ahead of the forthcoming Day of the National Enlighteners, the exhibition In the Footsteps of the Disciples: The Cyril and Methodius Route in Bulgaria – Part of the Council of Europe Cultural Route was presented at the Regional Historical Museum – Burgas by the Cyrillo-Methodian Research Centre.
The exhibition was opened on the day when the Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates St John of Rila the Wonderworker. On the same date in 1909, the Day of the National Enlighteners was celebrated for the first time.
The exhibition showcases some of the places across Bulgarian lands that preserve the memory of the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius and their disciples. These sites serve as key points in the development of the Bulgarian section of the Cyril and Methodius Route, certified as a Council of Europe Cultural Route in 2021. The opening was accompanied by a festive address delivered by Dr Ivanka Deleva, Chief Curator at the Regional Historical Museum – Burgas, and a lecture entitled Letter – Word – Image: How Icons Tell the Story of the Work of Saints Cyril and Methodius, delivered by Chief Assistant Professor Dr Totka Grigorova of the Cyrillo-Methodian Research Centre at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The exhibition was realised with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria.
